Help The Innocent

Animals are just as important.

Help The Innocent
Cassandra K. Caputo

Every single one life’s beings do something for us. We are connected to everything in some way, shape, or form. Creatures big and small are full of innocence and do a lot for our ecosystem, even if they do not know it. A lot of us are not aware of this and end up doing more harm than good in return. If we give back, we can help so much towards them, and even yourself. It does not even have to be something that you need to go out of your way to do, but sometimes that is the case and sacrifice of time never hurt anyone.

When it rains, little worms climb out of the dirt and rest on our sidewalks and roads. Humans created these, and without them, they would not be so confused in our path. They may not be the prettiest creatures you have seen, but they mean no harm. Scoop them up with your hands, or use a notebook of some sort, to guide them to the dirt. It is simple and keeps them from getting stuck there which leads them to shrivel due to confusion.

See a rock in the road? Slow down and make sure it is not moving. That ‘rock’ may be a tortoise that is just trying to travel across the street. All you need to do is pull over quick, grab them by the sides of their shells (stay away from their face!) and place them on the side away from the street. Some people confuse these little guys for turtles, and they do the worst of the worst. They think they put them in a pond or lake to “bring them back to their home”. Tortoises live on the land while turtles survive in the water. By throwing them in the water, you are drowning them, so please take this into account when you see one.

The winter seasons tend to be cruel to cats, especially the feral ones. They get very cold which can cause them to freeze and die from this. Their usual source of warmth and hiding place is underneath our cars and end up dying when we operate them. It does not take long to do a quick lookover to make sure nobody is hiding under there! Want to help even more? Make small shelter areas around your home. Fill them with warm blankets and leave dishes of water and cat food to keep them healthy. This will help so much on their journeys and keep them safe throughout the season.

These are just a few ways to help out the innocent beings around us. You can easily follow these tips and even find some more online to help! Stay aware, think logically, and stay safe through these processes. There are local areas you can contact if you need help with any issue you come across. The first ones that should be contacted are animal sanctuaries. If none of them for any reason can take them in,

wildlife rescues and different societies (like Animal Humane Society) can be contacted.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
