For those who don’t already know, there is an ongoing protest over a proposed oil pipeline called the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). It has been proposed to run oil through the Dakotas and into the heart of America, cutting right through Standing Rock, ND, where this protest has been taking place. This project, a model of oil pipe notorious for its tendency to falter and sprout leaks faster than grandma when she’s had too much wine, would cut directly through the water supply of the nearby Sioux tribe.

Were it to leak, it would decimate the water supply of the tribe, leaving them with no clean water whatsoever.

So, a massive protest has been created on the site the pipeline would damage, and unfortunately, it’s gotten violent. The protestors have remained nonviolent, but the law enforcement officers – including the military – have injured many people with rubber bullets, tear gas, and now, concussion grenades. Most people are wondering how to help.

Here's how you can help literally RIGHT NOW.

Sign The Petition

They are ALMOST done with the goal of 500,000 supporters – add your name to the change.org petition and help them make the final stretch!

Send Supplies Online

You don’t need to ship them supplies yourself! (though you can, if you do want to) You can just as easily buy things for them online. “But what do they want, Elan?” WELL, fair reader, they have an Amazon wish list!

You can buy them anything from napkins and gift cards, to generators and sleeping bags. These people are literally living in the protest area, so keeping them supplied is a major part of helping them stay safe while on the front lines. The Medic & Healer Council that’s been keeping them healthy and safe also has an Amazon wish list right here.

Call Their Governor

Governor Jack Dalrymple runs the state of North Dakota, and his office fields phone calls just like any other. If an administration is flooded with calls all regarding the same topic, it’s impossible for them to ignore.

If you do call, please be professional.

Donate directly to the tribe

The tribe has a GoFundMe right here that allows you to directly fund the livelihood of the Standing Rock Sioux. If you don’t want to buy something for the tribe directly, this is how you can still help out. Even $5 would help.

Call the Army Corps of Engineers

Because this is a government-sanctioned project, the Corps of Engineers reserves the permit to build on this land. Give ‘em a call and demand that they reverse that permit.

Again - please be professional if you call.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
