5 Small, Everyday Things You Can Do To Help the Earth

Climate change is a real, impending doom that a lot of people can feel helpless against. It seems like the Earth may be too far gone, although that is not the case (but could be soon). This week, I have five easy things for you to do in your everyday routine that can help reverse some of the effects of climate change. Be a part of changing the planet for the better!

Stop littering.

Seriously, just don't do it. Cigarette butts, wrappers, water bottles, anything that will not break down naturally in the environment relatively quickly, should not be in the environment. Hold onto your trash for a little while until you find a trash can. It may be annoying, but what good thing isn't at some point?

Avoid buying plastic, one-use water bottles.

Yes, I know Kroger is having a great deal on the 24-pack of water bottles, but don't do it. Reusable water bottles are not only better for the Earth but pay off exponentially in the long run. A reusable water bottle can pay for itself in as little as three weeks, depending on how often you are buying water bottles and how high quality your reusable water bottle is.

Reduce your use of single-use paper products.

Paper plates, paper bowls, paper towels, etc. are all easily replaceable at home. As a college student, I absolutely loved paper plates because I didn't have to wash any dishes in my tiny sink, but that is selfish thinking. Help out future generations by putting a little extra work in now. Also, another tip: if a public restroom has a choice between an air dryer and a paper towel, choose the air dryer.

Be conscious of your water consumption.

This one may seem a bit more difficult than the others since it does require you to change your routine. If you just really love your showers and taking a shorter shower seems a bit out of reach for you, make sure you are turning the water off when brushing your teeth. Be more water-conscious when hand-washing dishes. Always fill up your washing machine when doing laundry (and use cold water). Climate change and water usage are directly linked. Climate change can have a drastic, lasting effect on the water cycle. Do your part to reduce your impact!

Use the cruise control setting on your car.

This one may seem a bit far-fetched, but give it a chance. Your ever-changing acceleration and braking can be prevented with cruise control. Not only will you help out your wallet by increasing your gas mileage, but you help out the planet by reducing your car's gasoline consumption. (And you can use your newfound freedom to have your own Carpool Karaoke).

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
