On Friday, August 25, Hurricane Harvey hit the southeastern coast of Texas. Torrential rainfall has continued since, causing catastrophic flooding in the Greater Houston Area. When something with the magnitude of Hurricane Harvey affects any part of our country, we send our thoughts and prayers, and then claim how we there was something we could do. With Irma in the midst of Florida’s path, similar actions to aid will also be crucial.

Everyone is quick to want to help, but often don’t know how they can help from so far away. However, there are a variety of ways you can help the victims of Hurricane Harvey — some of which don’t involve cash donations.

The Red Cross

The Red Cross set up a text line text line under the number 90999 where you can text “HARVEY” to send a $10 donation. You can also call 1-855-999-GIVE to donate.

Food Banks

There are numerous food banks you could donate to that are currently serving those affected by Harvey. Two of these food banks are the Southeast Texas Food Bank and the Houston Food Bank. They would also accept cash donations and have been requesting those donations so they can quickly purchase high demand items.

South Texas Blood and Tissue Center

The south Texas blood center is searching for donors to give 2,000 units of blood. They are in desperate need of both O Positive and Negative, but any donations are appreciated.

Texas ASPCA

The Texas ASPCA has an amazon wish list for animals in need of attention, and accept donations on their website as well.

Texas Diaper Bank

Diapers are commonly not provided by disaster relief agencies, donations to this charity go to diapers and other various infant supplies that are commonly overlooked.

Portlight

Portlight is an organization that helps those with disabilities affected by natural disasters. For information or to donate, visit portlight.com
