Hello From The Other Side (Of Ohio)

For anyone that ever knew me in high school or the beginning of college would tell you that I vowed I'd never be in a long distance relationship. I thought that I couldn't do it and that the distance would be too much for me. Well, I'll be the one to tell you that I was wrong. Sometimes the special person in your life happens to be 250 miles away. So, if your person is far away too, then this is for you! If you're wondering how in the heck people do it, here is some insight. Here are five ways you know that you're in a long distance relationship:

1. You are jealous of the couples that can grocery shop together

The simplest tasks like doing laundry, grabbing lunch, or grocery shopping are the ones that are the hardest for you to let go. People tend to think that LDR (long distance relationship-ers) only miss doing extravagant things together. That couldn't be farther from the truth. There is just something so nice about asking your boyfriend to help fold laundry or asking whether to buy 1% or 2% milk. The little things really do mean the most.

2. You value phone calls like an inmate does...

...and you know who your one call is."Hi, are you busy? Okay, well do I have a story for you...". Being in a long distance relationship, you don't get to be there in person to witness the small events take place. So, phone calls and FaceTime are the best way to explain how your day is going. Texting is great, but it's so much nicer to get full details and hear their voice.

3. Getting to visit them is like Christmas to you

The night before visiting your person is as exciting as patiently waiting for Santa to come as a child. You think about what to wear and plan each day to the T. Time is precious when you two are together, so it's a huge deal. And don't even get me started on the actual drive to them...

4. You understand the importance of communication

When you're dating someone who lives close to you, fights are easier to deal with because you can hug it out. When you fight via phone call it's easier to ignore the situation by hanging up. It's so important that you don't let that happen. Even if it's hard and you're stubborn, you know that you can't sleep until you've talked it out.

5. You spend most of your money on gas and cards

For me, Cleveland to Cincinnati is a bit of a haul. Since I don't spend my money on him every weekend, I never mind filling up twice or three times for a 500 mile round trip. Sending cards in the mail is a great way to say 'I miss you'. At the end of the day, every penny is worth it.

Long distance relationships aren't easy. You have to have trust, good communication, and a desire to make it work. But, isn't that how all relationships should be? All I know is that I'd rather be far apart than not be together at all.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
