One of the coolest things about Spain is how diverse the different regions are. And while I've loved living and studying in Barcelona, its been amazing to experience southern Spain for a bit.
Currently I'm visiting Granada while on spring break. Right away there were some crazy differences in between here and Barcelona. For one there were Spanish flags everywhere. Back in Barca you're hard pressed to find a Spanish flag. Usually its just Catalan flags galore.
Then there was the crazy realization that I actually understood everyone, mostly because there was no Catalan being spoken. It was bizarre for the menus to not be in three different languages and even the street signs were all in a single language; castellano.
We came across flamenco performers in the street. (it was amazing!) There are signs for shows and flamenco houses plastered around the city. There's flamenco music playing around the town. Sometimes in a bar, or a street performer, or from a car. Whereas in Barcelona the only place I usually find flamenco is in the touristy places like Las Ramblas.
Its been beautiful here in Granada. There's definitely a sense of the Spain you learn about in school. The "typical" Spain with flamenco and sangria and siestas. And the very best part is that with every drink in a bar you get a free tapas!
