Spoiler Alert: The following contains spoilers from the Walking Dead. Read at your own risk.
Disclaimer: This article was written before viewing episode 5 of season 6, and does not include any deaths that may have happened.
The addicting, heart-wrenching AMC show has repeatedly broken our hearts by killing some of the best characters. Some deaths we’re still grieving, while others we celebrate (like Shane, Dawn, and the Governor). The following are the 10 most painful deaths from "The Walking Dead."
1. Glenn Rhee (Unconfirmed)
The third episode of season six left Glenn under a mass of blood-thirsty walkers that seemed to be tearing him apart, but many fans speculate that Glenn was trapped under Nicholas and still alive. While this seems unlikely, and AMC removed his name from the credits in the fourth episode of the season, we are still desperately hoping that our favorite character somehow pulls through and we will once again be able to see our favorite couple together again.
2. Beth Greene
Just when we thought she was safe and would be reunited with Daryl, Beth was accidentally shot by Dawn (who was then immediately killed by Daryl. Yay!). Beth’s shocking death broke fans’ hearts because of the beautiful character created by Emily Kinney. Beth was also the last family Maggie had, and it ended Beth’s blossoming relationship with Daryl. (Poor Daryl).
3. Tyreese
AMC dedicated an entire episode to Tyreese’s demise, which gave fans an hour to mentally prepare for the loss of a kind, gentle, loving character. Fans knew the end was near when Tyreese was greeted by the recently deceased Beth, Bob, Lizzie, and Mika. *curls up in fetus position and cries for hours*
4. Hershel Greene
Although Hershel was originally frustratingly stubborn, he grew into a beloved and wise beacon of hope. (Why must AMC always kill the wise grandfather figures?) Hershel becomes another casualty in the Governor’s thirst for power, and another person for Rick and the group to mourn. Damn you, Governor.
5. Bob
After surviving a gunshot and an amputated (and then consumed) leg, a walker bite finally killed our perpetually optimistic friend. Bob left behind a grieving Sasha, who several episodes later lost her brother as well.
6. Noah
While Noah was only introduced in the fifth season, fans grew to love him after he befriended Beth and took a beating while covering for her. Noah met his end after revisiting his family home with Rick, Tyreese, and Michonne. Noah discovered that his family had turned into Walkers and was too consumed by grief to protect himself from an approaching Walker.
7. Dale
The original wise, grandfather figure was killed after Carl left a Walker alive in the woods nearby Hershel’s farm. Our only solace was that Dale didn't have to see Andrea killed a season later.
8. Lori
While Lori was not always a fan favorite, her death was certainly emotional. During a Walker attack, Lori went into labor, but due to unforeseen complications, Maggie was forced to perform a C-section on Lori, who died in the process. Carl then had to shoot his deceased mother to prevent her from turning.
9. Lizzie & Mika
Fans could tell that something was off about the orphaned sisters, particularly Lizzie. Mika was extremely gentle and unwilling to protect herself from bad people while Lizzie befriended the Walkers and attempted to convince everyone that they were simply “different” by killing Mika and waiting for her to turn. Luckily, Carol and Tyreese discovered Lizzie before she could kill Judith, but it was too late for Mika, and Carol had no choice but to kill Lizzie. (Poor Carol has the worst luck with kids).
10. Axel
Rick and the group discovered several remaining prisoners after moving into the prison, and Axel proved himself to be kind and useful before being shot by one of the governor’s people. Even though he was only on the show for a few episodes, his death was still sad.
Honorable mentions: Andrea, Milton, Meryl, Lily and Meghan, Sophia, Buttons the horse and Tabitha the goat.
All in all, "The Walking Dead" is depressing, yet we return again and again to get our hearts broken.
