Pain;

NOUN

Physical suffering or discomfort caused by illness or injury

ex: "She's in great pain."

Synonyms: Suffering, agony, tourture, discomfort, ache

VERB

Cause mental or physical pain to

Pain can be caused by many things. Sometimes it is inflicted at random, while other times it is inflicted with pure intent. The worse kind of pain isn't physical though, it's mental. Our brains go through several stages when our heart's are broken for whatever reason. It's more than just a feeling where all the butterflies inside die, it is far more than that.

Our Brain

Our brains are connected so deeply to our emotions that sever pain can impact our thinking and lead us to slip into depression, causing us to act in ways we typically wouldn't. It's really all about the memories, of course you can't focus on the bad right now because it doesn't seem to exist. You look at a picture of the two of you and you instantly feel sick, but you can't force yourself to look away either. That's because the second you saw their face, all your blood rushed to your brains pleasure pulse. Don't forget the command center for craving, that gets hit too. It demands for your attention, probably the reason you're obsessed with looking at their Facebook page or staring at your phone waiting for their name to pop up.

Thats where the second part comes into play, rejection. This also sends blood flowing vigorously through your body, however it heads to the secondary somatosensory cortex and the dorsal posterior insula which both are responsible for inflicting physical pain. That's why you feel a pain in your chest and aches all over your body. Rejection also creates the need for communication just to get a response.

Our Stomach, Immune System and Self

Your nervous system is maxed out on stress which leads for your digestion to slow way down. Your stomach hurts, and you have zero appetite. The stress leads to cell damaging inflammation which prevents your body to fight infection, allowing viruses to attack you easier. Along with that, insomnia kicks in. Insomnia is described as a sleep disorder, preventing one from sleeping. This is due to the million questions running through our heads like "What did I do wrong?", "Will it ever be okay again?", "Can we work this out?". As a human, we demand the answers to these soul sucking questions, but unfortunately we never seem to get them when we crave them so badly.

When we are affected so deeply by mental and physical pain we lose track of ourselves. We become numb to feelings, depressed and vulnerable. We all hit points like this in our lives and instead of judging someone based upon their actions of grief show them support.

Do not belittle them. Do not call them crazy. Do not make them feel like they are nothing. Do not encourage their recently developed habits.

Do lift them up with encouragement. Do help them realize how extraordinary they are. Do show them the light at the end of the tunnel. Do forgive them.

We can't prevent these situations from coming our way but we all know that one day, it will all be okay. Through the mess we lose ourselves in from the pain, there is always a greater thing to come out of it.

Do not let the pain define you, let it bring a stronger version of you come out of it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
