“Rock the CASA 5K,” Kappa Alpha Theta’s spring philanthropy event is happening on Saturday, April 14, 2018! You can run (or walk, we don’t judge) over to join us at the Theta house for our 5K!

The members of Theta have been working tirelessly for this event. You’ve probably seen us holding banners across campus, posting on social media, or just blabbing about it to our friends (and for me, basically half my English class).

We’ve spent months scheduling, designing, and planning every little detail that will go into this run (don’t ask the girls in charge how much sleep they’ve gotten lately). When you arrive, you can enjoy fun food, exciting performances by A&M student organizations, an amazing silent auction, and even a visit from Reveille! We could not be more excited for this upcoming event!

The day of Theta 5K, the house will be flooded with families, students, and friends enjoying the fun and festivities. Decorations will line the street (#instagoals) with offerings of delicious food (breakfast tacos, anyone?), prizes, puppies, you name it. The enthusiasm that surfaces from both the girls involved and those participating in 5K is magnetic.

As you run the race, you’re being cheered on by Thetas (it makes the whole “running” thing a lot easier), served by Thetas, and celebrating with Thetas. But at the end of the day, Thetas aren't doing this for themselves.

As the Thetas work, play, and celebrate with one another and our community of friends and supporters, you can also see the people of Texas A&M doing the same. People of every stage of life can walk through our chapter’s doors to enjoy themselves, knowing that through their attendance, they are making a difference in someone else’s life. To our members, Theta 5K is more than just the run itself. It’s the friends and family and how we have the power to affect the lives of children who have been neglected and abused.

What makes our event so special is that all of the proceeds of the event will be donated to our philanthropies, Scotty’s House, Theta Foundation, and Voices for Children-CASA of the Brazos Valley:

Scotty’s House is a local child advocacy center for the Brazos Valley area. They provide services, for children and families who have suffered from child abuse. Through Theta’s donations, Scotty’s House has been able to offer therapy and physical examinations for victims of abuse, fund positions for additional counselors and therapists, as well as improve children’s experiences when dealing with abuse.

CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, is Theta's national philanthropy. Our chapter of Theta works specifically with the Voices for Children chapter here that helps serve the Brazos Valley area. The child’s advocate, or CASA, studies the case and represents the child in court, assisting with the legal processes. Some Scotty's House kids become CASA kids, so it is truly amazing seeing the connection between our philanthropies.

Together, we have the ability to impact the lives of others. These children, like all of us, deserve the gift of unconditional love. They should not be marked as solely “victims of abuse,” but rather, offered the opportunity of a fresh start, investing in our next generation’s strongest leaders. By promoting these phenomenal causes, we are allowing kids to overcome adversity, grow, and change the world around them.

The energy and excitement we all have on Theta 5K day arise because we know we are supporting an amazing cause that deserves recognition. Thetas are so passionate about 5K because we know that this event is not for our own benefit. Every single person who is involved in the event is changing the lives of a family or child of Scotty’s House or CASA.

We are so excited to make a change in other people’s lives, and we hope you are too! Join us on April 14, 2018, for Theta 5K and help us give children a new beginning!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
