Everyone loves those new songs that come out, the ones that are always played on repeat on the radio. But there is nothing like listening to a throwback. Then suddenly all the memories that surround the song come flooding your mind again. Depending on the song, it could be a be a bittersweet nostalgic trip down memory lane or it could be a reminder of some bad times. Bad times that came and were conquered by you, someone who overcame these times.
The best throwbacks have to be those pop songs that were played at every school dance and whose words everyone knew. My heart aches with nostalgia as memories of a simpler, less stressful mind are rehashed. It's so nice to remember doing crazy things with your friends or those long family road trips in which you and your siblings fought to have their favorite songs played. I would always eventually get to choose the songs and my brother would sit pouting for a good 10 minutes. These memories have love in them. They are little pockets of happiness given to you by a three-minute song.
Some songs, however, bring back painful memories. You just never want to hear that song but yet you'll be doing your own thing at the grocery store or dining hall and you'll hear it. And you'll remember. Pain and sadness. But I think it's important to not forget the pain you went through because, in the end, you did get through those hard times and are now a more experienced and strong person.
Old songs are gonna come out and surprise you at times, not because of their meanings but because of what you associate them with. These memories, good or bad, have worked to make you the person you are today. These songs serve as a timeline of the growth you've had in your life.
