Like the billions of other humans on this crazy blue marble, food is important to me. It’s a vital factor in my existence as a human being. Whether I like it or not, it is necessary to care about nutrition if I want to live a long life. Here are some of the reasons why eating healthy as a college student is the absolute worst.
1. It’s expensive
Buying organic is no picnic, especially if you’re trying to bring that food to your picnic. Buying fresh fruits and veggies costs a lot, and the amount never seems to reflect the price. It’s much cheaper to buy snacks wrapped in glossy packaging, but that’s not good for your health.
2. Some foods are awful
Am I in love with kale? Not one bit, mostly because it’s bitter and reminds me of a swamp monster. So, no, I do not love kale. I wouldn’t even accept kale’s friend request on Facebook. But it’s something I eat regularly because of its vitamins. I guess part of wanting to be healthy is eating things you don’t enjoy. How adult.
3. It’s a test of willpower.
All the time, I want to grab a donut and head out the door. Making a banana smoothie is so much work, not nearly as simple as Pop Tarts or any other pre-packaged breakfast food. But I’m stronger than strawberry icing, no matter how sweet it is. If I believe in myself, I can achieve it. That donut's got nothing on me, at least if I don’t let it.
Eating healthy is no cakewalk, as the cake is limited and sugar-free. But it’s achievable and doable. Even though I complain about it, I’m grateful to have the option and resources to make healthy choices. I’m grateful for my new found appreciation of nutrition, even though I sometimes enjoy ragging on it more than actually living with it. So although I’ll never be the Instagram famous health guru, at least I’ve got extended years to keep trying. Hopefully?
