It's finally summer! You passed all your classes, you moved yourself back home and you started your summer job. All you want to do now is become the best couch potato to ever grace your couch and embrace every opportunity to be lazy. I am here to tell you to stop immediately, do not spend the next two months on the couch. In fact, I am here to tell you how to have a healthy and happy summer.

1. Go outside!

You could do some yard work for your parents, work on a personal project, or go exploring somwhere. Breathe in the fresh air and soak up the sun.

2. Wear sunscreen

Make sure you don't get a sunburn! We all want a nice glow, but nobody wants a painful sunburn.

3. Drink water

Your body needs water to stay hydrated in this heat! Try replacing some of your sugary afternoon drinks, like soda and iced coffee, with a glass of water.

4. Read a book

You have to exercise your brain too! If you're taking foreign language classes at school, you might even try an easy novel in that language.

5. Work out a few times per week

Even if you don't like to work out, just try to be active. It can help sleep better at night, feel more energized, and you might grow to like it after all!

6. Don't fight with your parents and siblings

It might happen a few times anyway, but seriously, try to get along. You probably won't be living with them much longer and you should enjoy the time that you will spend together.

7. Don't spend time around toxic friends

If you're back in your hometown for the summer, don't hang out with that high school friend who always made you feel bad. Maybe this person has changed, but if they haven't you should seek healthier friendships.

8. Volunteer your time

Ask around at public libraries, food pantries, and parks. Now that school is out, a lot of families have more kids at home to look after and feed than they would during the school day. Get involved and give back to your community.

9. Wash your face

Again, it's hot outside. Make sure you wash the sweat and make up off your face to avoid breakouts.

10. Pamper yourself in general

Take the time to give yourself a mani-pedi or to make a face mask. You'll feel relaxed and ready to take on the world.

11. Make sure you get plenty of sleep

Make sure you're getting a decent amount of sleep at night. We all know we don't sleep enough during the school year, so now is the time to enjoy those precious hours. Don't sleep too much, but don't forget to indulge in a full night of shut-eye.

12. Have fun!

Take time for your favorite hobbies and people, or for a new hobby or new friends. Whatever you do, just make sure you spend some time to take care of yourself and feel great all summer long.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
