As a college student, just one of the many newfound responsibilities you receive includes the joy of grocery shopping.
Putting anything into your cart may just be what you've always dreamed of. Between the creamy ice cream in the frozen section and the salty temptations lingering in the chip aisle, it's important to think wisely when grocery shopping. Asking the question of, "is this something that will nurture my body and make me stronger?" versus, "does this taste good?" is something everyone should ask themselves before placing an object into their cart.
Don't get me wrong, I believe 100% that you should treat yo'self every now because sometimes that piece of cake is just what you needed after a long day. Being a college girl, there's enough stress between classes and having a social life. Instead of turning for the chip bag when you're stressed, opt for a healthy alternative instead. Here are 15 healthy foods every college girl should have on their grocery list.
1. Quick Oats.
While some instant oatmeal packets truly pack in the sugar, opting for plain instant oats can be a better option. You're free to add whichever sweeteners or fruits of your choice, and it's a super quick and affordable breakfast.
2. Grapes.
Grapes taste great any time of the day. They can make for a quick breakfast or a snack between classes. Throw some in the freezer for a special treat!
3. Carrots.
Carrots are delicious by themselves or paired with some low-calorie dip, my favorite pairing is carrots and dill dip. Super cheap, and you can feel less guilty eating a handful of these than potato chips, but still get the crunch factor.
4. Granola or protein bars.
Cliff bars can be a little pricey, but they're well worth the cost. These bars really fill you up, whether you're short on time and use them as a meal replacement or as a quick snack in between mealtimes.
5. Popcorn.
Not necessarily the poppable movie theater butter kind, but Skinny Pop is a great brand of popcorn that's good for you and tastes good, too.
6. Applesauce.
Who said these applesauce pouches were just for kids? They are super convenient and take snacks to a whole new level when a little pouch can be thrown in your backpack for a delicious snack any time throughout the day.
7. Hummus.
Hummus is loaded with healthy fats and protein to keep you going when your days are dragging.
8. Cottage cheese.
Certainly, not everyone is a fan of cottage cheese, but if you are, it's a great item to pick up from the supermarket. Cottage cheese is also packed with protein and makes a nice side dish or snack.
9. Eggs.
For a simple breakfast, scramble up some egg whites. For a simple snack, eat one boiled. Eggs open up the door for so many healthy options.
10. Nuts.
By picking up a simple mixture of peanuts, almonds, and cashews, you can make your own nut mix or even trail mix by adding some dried fruit or other goodies to the mix.
11. Bell Peppers.
Just like carrots, bell peppers give you the crunch that chips do, but for way less calories.
12. Apples.
Pair some cut up apples with peanut butter or low-fat yogurt and you've got a super simple snack.
13. Bananas.
Bananas are perfect if you're on the go, or when thrown into a quick and healthy fruit smoothie.
14. Blue corn chips and salsa.
If you're just dying for some chips and salsa, go with blue corn tortilla chips. Salsa is delicious for dipping and you can recreate a favorite snack at a way healthier cost.
15. Dark chocolate.
If you have a sweet tooth like me and can't resist the chocolate, don't feel bad! Pick up some dark chocolate and treat yourself, girl!
