Democrats continue to voice their frustration on the current president’s agenda to push for a “halt” on payments issued to insurers, in attempts to revitalize the health care situation. His decision came on Friday, during a lapse in the excitement of the health care system after continuous disagreements between Democrats and Republicans on the health care bill that can affect the United States as a whole. Democrats took immediate offense to the action taken by the president, and looks to fire back by balancing the federal agency budget in order to reinstate insurer payments.
Although these turn of events will take much more than a statement made by the president in order to come to fruition, many are speculating as to whether or not the president is making these decisions based off of the Republican’s inability to successfully pass a repeal bill. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has spoken on this issue stating that the president is encouraging republicans to reach a “bipartisan deal that would have some flexibility”. When asked for her opinion on the subject matter on CBS, she replied that she hopes that a deal can be made so that the insurer payments can continue, yet proper reform can be accomplished. Whether or not the Republican Party will heed to the president’s message or work well to achieve a level playing field between them and the Democratic Party will be revealed in the coming weeks.
However, the Democratic Party shows no signs of letting up as Trump has an important meeting with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell; a person whom trump criticized for the failure of repealing the ACA (Affordable Care Act). With some people skeptical on the end result of this meeting, experts say that this meeting will actually help the tension that has been brewing between the two as they work on getting the issue of healthcare as well as the unsolved issue with DACA and federal spending rectified.
There have been ongoing negotiations by Democrats to stabilize the ACA even through the failure of the repeal bill. With some leverage happening, there are still some demands from the Republicans to add some reforms to the current ACA or risk immediate opposition of the end result. Don’t take this away from the moderates who support the ACA, with some believing that millions are going to either lose insurance or pay an unbelievable amount in coverage if the ACA does not include those payments to insurers.
Senator Susan Collins made a statement regarding the severity of the decision made by Trump (Statement made according to the Washington post):
“What the president is doing is affecting the ability of vulnerable people to receive health care right now. This is not a bailout of the insurers. What this money is used for is to help low income people afford their deductibles and their co-pays so that their health care is available to them”.
–Statement made on behalf of the Washington Post
This disruption of insurance premiums can prove disastrous to everyone regardless of the income that you pull in. the government is hanging on a thread with the issue of health care being spiraling out of control. Any wrong move can result in mass amount of people becoming uninsured, and break the pockets of people who obtain insurance. But just like everything else, we will decide whether or not negotiations considering the federal spending budget will prove to be the deciding factor on the route both Democrats and Republicans will take to satisfy the health care crisis.
