Selena (Marie) Gomez is not a name you forget. She has been around forever despite being so young the world knows and adores her. She started out on the beloved show that many of us watched Barney and friends along with her best friend Demi Lovato. She later made her name through Disney channel with her own show Wizards of Waverly Place where she was the main character, Alex Russo. She can be seen in many movies along the lines of: Another cinderella story, spring breakers, Neighbors 2: Sorority rising, behaving badly and many more. She created a band that was featured in many of her songs and videos called Selena & the Scene. So as I was saying hard to forget because she has made a name for herself in this business and is extremely successful.

Now that you know who she is as an idol, let me tell you that she is also human. In 2012, Selena went public to the world that she was suffering from the invisible disease lupus. Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years. (2016 Lupus Foundation of America, Inc.)

Not as many people knew about lupus and its struggles before Selena made her brave coming out with her illness and the struggles that came with it. Now I knew more than most because my mother suffers with lupus so I know second hand how painful and serious it truly is. I admired her in 2012 when she told everyone because since it is invisible it is hard to explain such an illness and have everyone understand. But what I respected most about her happened recently; I am a huge mental health advocate and fighter. So when she was strong enough to see that she was suffering with panic attacks and depression on top of her physical pain. She then cancelled the rest of her tour and I was so proud. I know it is hard to just for me to put myself first because I was always trying to make everyone else happy. She has millions of fans maybe billions and she went out and said I am no good to you like this. She is taking time for herself to get better and come back to us strong again. This is why I love her I have been a fan since way back when but now she has a new level of respect from me and I’m sure many of her fans. So when you see the #PrayforSelena please so this illness is no joke she needs our support more than ever as Selenators we owe her this. True fans stick it out through the good, bad, and the important moments like this. You are in my prayers Selena.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
