Album: "Headspace"
Artist: Issues
Record Label: Rise Records
Since their inception in 2012, Issues has been redefining what it means to be a metalcore band. The band made a name for itself through their unique blending of different genres. They manage to combine metalcore influnces with the elements of pop, hip hop, R&B flawlessly in each song they release. The title track “Realest” proved that Headspace would be unlike any of their previous albums.
Overall Headspace shows the growth of this band. The album itself is heavily diversified from the record scratched “Flojo” to the country inspired track “Yung & Dum”. Songs like “The Realest” have funk themed bass solos combine beautifully with the pop and metalcore influences of the song. The biggest change perhaps comes from co-vocalist Michael Bohn. Unlike previous albums, Michael has stepped up to be a co-singer instead of stagnating unclean vocalist. Tyler Carter himself has also shown his growth in this album through lyrical content. Early songs by the band served as a platform for Tyler to vent out frustration towards his former group: Woe Is Me. Headspace, however, shows off the maturity of the band. The album itself talks about love, about letting go, and about retrospection.
Issues is a band that constantly pushes the boundaries of the genre. They have risen to become one of the most dynamic bands in the scene. Each song features a unique combination of genres. The lyrics, vocals, and music composition have improved dramatically. The only flaw I see with this album is that it can be difficult to initially appreciate it. However, this album grows on you the more you listen to it. It offers a fresh sound that both old and new fans of the band can enjoy.
