After nearly a year of subscribing to Apple Music, I decided that I need to use the services regularly in order to really get my money worth. One of my favorite features is the “What’s New,” where new albums are displayed. This summer the dope cover art of “Major Key” caught my attention and I’ve been listening to the album ever since. Khaled is sitting a royal chair in the middle of a beautiful garden filled with a variation of pink flowers while a lion lays in front of him. If it were a book, I would read it. If it were a link, I would click it. The songs on Khaled’s album explain why he is king and that he has the major keys to success locked in.
Apple’s description called the album the All-Stars of hip-hop. The all-stars is a great comparison being that “Major Key” has so many features from some pretty big artist including Nicki Minaj, Meghan Trainor, Yo Gotti, Future, Busta Rhymes and Fabolous. The album even has a song from Kodak Black featuring Jeezy and French Montana. These collaborations are so satisfying for fans of hip-hop, rap and trap music. One of my favorite songs is entitled “Forgive Me Father,” by Meghan Trainor, Wale and Wiz Khalifa. This song is one of the more inspirational pieces on the album.
Songs like “I Got the Keys” and “F Up the Club” are more upbeat and hype, resulting in them already being club bangers. Radio single, “Do you Mind,” has so many artists on the track, even a vocal bridge from Nicki Minaj (yes, she sings too). My next favorite is “Ima Be Alright,” by Bryson Tiller and Future. Bryson can do no wrong in my eyes and Future is a beat monster, meaning he can create a hit on any beat. “Holy Key” caught my mom’s attention when she heard vocals from Betty Wright on the chorus. Yes, Betty Wright!
Khaled made sure to pay respect to lyricist J. Cole and Nas, both of them having a solo song named after them. Literally the only thing missing is a collab from Kanye West and Beyonce… Now that would have put the cherry on the shake! However, Jay Z is on track one, “I Got the Keys,” where he slays with Future.
Major Key is a huge print in Dj Khaled’s legacy. This is what you release after you come off of tour with the one and only, Beyonce! His famous “we the best” is 100% backed, with the “we” referring to anyone who does the opposite of what “they” said could not be done. I can find motivation on this album the same as I can find a good song to turn up to. This album can be played without skipping a song. Dj Khaled is a world-class producer, still shying away from delivering any verses on his songs. He’s the Kirk Franklin of hip-hop! If you’re tired of “For Free” being repeatedly played on the radio, just find the other 13 tracks on Major Key and you will be find yourself saying “wow, Khaled’s the best.”
