Why Big Sisters Should Love Their Little Sisters

So you're cooped up comfortably in your room, perhaps scrolling through your Instagram, listening to watching a movie or sitting there staring blankly at your laptop screen trying to conjure some topic to write about as I am right now. You're pretty content sitting in solitude with no one to distract you from going about your business.

That's when you hear it.

Frantic feet bound past your bedroom door leaving a trail of noise and a sense of irritation at the abrupt disruption. You hold your breath, hoping those littl feet keep moving, but you know perfectly well you're just not that lucky. They come to a sudden halt, backtracking to land right in front of your bedroom door. You look up as the door swings open, revealing the small human that, you are 100% sure, was created to destroy your life. As they walk in, babbling about nothing in particular, you tune them out letting a million different thoughts run through your head.

Why are you in here?

What are you even talking about?

Could you just leave already!

If you have a younger sister, you probably know the feeling. You can even picture exactly what I'm talking about, rolling your eyes, or chuckling at the fact that this is happening to you right in this moment.

Younger sisters are something quite special. You will never meet anyone as infuriating, yet fascinating at the same time, as they are.

They take your things without permission. They put on your makeup. They empty your perfume bottle. They butt into your conversations. They fight with you. They enter your room without asking. They ruin your plans. They turn your parents against you, and they make you angry like no other.

Despite the constant feeling of irritation you harbor towards them, you have to stop and think about all the great things they contribute to your life.

They teach you things. They love you, even at the times when you act like a completely awful older sister. They serve as a companion when you get lonely. They cover for you to your parents. They listen to your personal drama. They make fun of things with you. They laugh with you. They cry with you.

But all-in-all, they make your life a lot more interesting.

Younger sisters are made to be a foil to your personality; they highlight all of the good and bad things about you, and vice-versa.

The next time you're ready to snap at your sister about how annoying she is, think twice about all the things they do for you, knowingly or not. Think about how to make time to show them you appreciate them. Think about how to show them that you understand what they're going through, since you've been in their shoes before. Think about listening to what they have to say for once.

Think about how much you love and care for them.

Reflect on how you treat them, because you never know when the time will come that you might need them.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
