I had the idea this week from the beginning that I was going to write something about myself that not too many people knew about me. I mean, I have this platform, so why not put it out there and let people know about things that normally don’t come up in everyday conversation? From an outside perspective, maybe people can tell depending on where and when they see me, but the idea of having my own personal style has been, for quite some time, something I love to play around with and show. I don’t usually use the phrase “I’m really into fashion,” because that gives off the impression that I follow all of the latest fashion trends and wear whatever is popular during a given season, which is not the case at all. I mean, if I really like something that is popularly worn, sure, I will 100 percent do it, but I like the term "style" better because I don’t strive to follow the most popular trends necessarily. I wear what I love and outfits I create myself through inspiration I find everywhere, even if it is just walking on the street. The main idea here is there is more than one side to each person, and I like to reflect the different sides of me in how I dress and the outfits I wear because if I had to stick to one single sort of style, so much of me would be lost right there. So yeah, when you don’t see me on my lazy days wearing a black "X-Men" sweatshirt and legging or something like that, my own style is something I’ve been passionate about for a while.
Like I mentioned before, when it comes to me, I don’t have to say, “This is my style and I’m going to stick to it.” I can change it up depending on how I feel that day and can go completely opposite from the day before. You might see me on a Tuesday wearing a really girly outfit like a skater skirt (just a normal skirt with a specific silhouette) and a white lace top, while on the following day it might be the complete opposite with a casual sweater, jeans and combat boots. I don’t mind dressing two completely opposite ways on two different days because it really shows who I am, and even though they are different, they both equally show who I am as a person. For me personally, I have a girly side (which some of my favorite outfits I create come from), an athletic side, casual side and many more. The better question is, what side don’t I have when it comes to my style? When I have to dress up for an occasion, my excitement goes through the roof, whether it be for a holiday where I can pick out a cute winter dress or a concert where you better believe I will be lacing up those military boots. That’s what's so great though — I don’t have to necessarily tell people who I am. I can show them by displaying the different sides of me through the completely different outfits I wear.
Although it is hard to describe sometimes because it is so diverse, my personal style is a lot of combining and balancing out my girly and super casual side. My friends know me well enough to understand my absolute love for my hair bows I wear whenever I can. It’s become almost my trademark at this point because I don’t see too many people ever wearing them but hey, I love them. When I’m feeling a super casual way and wear black leggings, lace-frilled high socks, boots and a Yellowcard sweatshirt, to balance out the casualness of the outfit I will slap a bow on that outfit and put a girly touch on it. The same goes for outfits I take longer to put together. If I’m wearing a dress or romper in the summer I will try to balance it out and wear short black ankle boots to add that edge to the look. Sometimes I like to completely show one side of me in how I dress and other times I like to combine the sides. Either way, getting to choose whatever I set my mind to that day is one of the reasons having my own personal style and choosing the clothes I wear is something I love. So whether it is a bow, a skirt, over-sized sweaters, dresses/rompers, jeans, kimonos or an All Time Low hat, chances are the next day you will see me in something completely different, and I love that.
I’m always on the lookout for style inspiration everywhere. Whether it be from the internet, walking on the streets or even sometimes in movies, I love seeing someone wear something that catches my eye and then recreating it to fit myself. Another thing not too many people may know is that I keep an entire album of pictures on my phone of outfits that I love and can recreate if I ever don't know what to wear one day. I go to those pictures and choose one that I want to try or add my own flare to (like the pictures pasted below and throughout this entire article). A lot of people have creative outlets like writing (which is obviously one of mine), blogging, podcasting and more, but my favorite creative outlet is my style and getting the chance to put together my own outfit is one of my favorite things to do.
If I had to describe to you where most of my style comes from and who is my “icon” in that respect, it would definitely be Bethany Mota. For anyone who doesn’t know her, she started on YouTube (and still makes style/outfit videos to this day) and now has her own clothing line at Aeropostale. She is pretty much the reason I got so into all of this, and her style is definitely my favorite and where I get inspiration for all of my outfits. These are some of her styles from her videos that are almost identical to what I wear on a daily basis when I can.
So there you go. If you didn’t know before, you know now. Style is something I love and always will. When people compliment me on my outfits, I get so excited, and it makes me feel great because I put a decent amount of effort into my outfit ideas. When people say they like them, they have no idea how much that makes my day. Even if it is as simple as someone liking the bow I wear in my hair, it makes me so happy because style is something I love so much, and when people mention it to me it is the best. So for anyone who reads this or likes putting together outfits, let me tell you that finding your own personal style is always the best because you get to show people who you are and be as creative as you want to be.
