A dog is a privilege in the shape of a fluffy body, with innocent eyes and an honest wagging tail, that knows all about love and loyalty—at least more than anybody else in this world.
It is a privilege because it is an experience that will almost obligate you to be happy, even when it seems impossible to be. It will force you to run under the sun, and walk under the rain. It will force you to get to know your neighbors, and sometimes even fight with them. Your dog will protect you; they'll park if he or she senses danger.
Having a dog is a privilege because it will teach you so many different things. From your dog you will learn how to be feisty, especially when you “smell” a human that is not so human, because yes, from your dog you will learn to sharpen your instincts. Also, you'll learn how to become a better human being—which is ironic, but also very true.
From your dog you will learn how to listen, even to the silence. You will learn how to speak with your eyes, you will learn to forgive and love without resentment. Having a dog is a privilege because the moment you adopt one, your heart will be more dog.
Loving a dog is a privilege. It is an unconditional kind of love that can’t be obtained anywhere else. A love that speaks without words and resonates in the deepest parts of your being, and it will give you a kind of peace that many people never did.
Having a dog is a privilege that many haven’t had the pleasure to experience. But if you haven’t yet, here is my advice to you: do not leave this world without having its most valuable privilege—a dog.
