One of the most exciting experiences in college is making new friendships. Going Greek allows you to create long-lasting and unique relationships, and while most of these are with your sorority sisters, it is not uncommon to find that one special person that you click with. She may not share the same letters or ritual as you, but she's your best friend, and that's why she is the greatest.
Friends on friends on friends
By joining a sorority, you gain loads of new friendships with all of your new sisters. By having a best friend in a different sorority, you also get to meet and befriend all of her new sisters. So through your relationship with her, the amount of people you can hang out with increases tenfold.
They give you a break from your sisters
No matter how much you love someone, spending every waking moment with them can be exhausting and cause frustration. A best friend with different letters provides you a vacation from the obstacles faced in any type of sisterhood. So at times, when tempers run high and things get tense within your chapter, having someone who is uninvolved yet totally gets the situation can be a major source of relief.
They always supports you
Being Greek can at times throw a little extra stress your way. Whether it's initiation week, big/little season or mandatory events, she is always there to remind you that you will make it through whatever situation comes your way. Having a friend in a different house is especially beneficial when it comes to raising money for philanthropies because you know that she'll always be a guaranteed ticket sold to yours just as you will be for hers.
They understand what you're going through
No matter the letters, y'all are Greek together. What this means is that she understands everything that is involved with being in a sorority. She's there to share in your excitement when you get the little you wanted or when your chapter surpassed its fundraising goal, but she's also there for when things get rough too. Maybe you didn't get the leadership position you wanted, or you were called into discipline and didn't think you deserved it, or maybe the chapter is arguing over something trivial—whatever the case may be,
she's there to give an objective opinion and advice, which can help to give any situation a new perspective. So whether it's a congratulations or a pep talk, she's got you.It makes your friendship stronger
She may be in a different house, but that hasn't weakened your friendship in the least. If anything, it's strengthened it. It helps you learn that important balance between healthy competition and unwavering support. Also, since your schedules will often conflict, it makes the time spent together that much more special and better.
So while at first you may be bummed if you and your best friend don't join the same sorority, ultimately, it can be a blessing in disguise. I am incredibly thankful for the unique friendship I have with my best friend and the different letters she sports as it has only made college that much more interesting and fun! (ilysm, G!)
