What It's Like Having An Older Sister

Why my older sister is, and always will be, my best friend.

Just 3 years apart my sister and I have grown up together with me falling closely behind in her footsteps. There isn’t a big enough thank you to give to my sister who has done all she could to always make my life easier. No matter how near or far we are from each other I know that we will always be in touch and she will continue to be my role model.

1. She is someone I can count on

We haven’t always seen eye to eye but she has always been there for me at a moment’s notice. She has been my shoulder to cry on and my safe place when I need to get away from it all. Without my sister, I don’t know where I would be.

2. She knows just what to say to make me happy

We all have people in our lives that know how to cheer us up. My sister doesn’t do it by sending funny memes or jokes, she does it by encouraging me and reminding me of how far I’ve come, and she makes sure I know she’s proud of me. Growing up she would sometimes pick me up from school with a surprise Dunkin Iced Coffee or even one time she picked up three different types of fries and we drove down to a local lake to make a video of us testing them to see which ones we liked better.

3. She is a second mom

Growing up, my sister would take care of everything for me. She would make me breakfast and clean my dishes for me. To this day I’ll sometimes text her for her help because no matter what, she will always take care of me.

4. She shares similar taste

In all fairness, a lot of my interests have come from watching her. I saw whatever she was doing as the cool thing to do and I wanted to do it too.

5. She’s an inspiration

My sister is an incredible person and has grown into such a beautiful woman. She could have it all if she wanted to. Seeing her accomplishments makes me want to work harder just so I can be compared to her.

6. She will always give me honest advice

My sister is always right even when I won’t admit it. She is the person I normally go to for advice about school and other life things. I don’t always like to listen to what she has to say the first time around but she is usually right.

7. She taught me everything I know

I am who I am because of the people who raised me. She has been a big influence on who I am as a person and how I view the world. She taught me to be strong, to be brave, and to always believe in a better tomorrow.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
