Having Multiple Roommates, As Told By 'The Office'

The iconic series shows a lot of laughs, a lot of love, and a lot of screaming--which is what living with a lot of roommates is like.

At my university, if you stick with campus housing through your junior and senior years, you'll start looking towards the on-campus apartment buildings. Having suffered through dorm life for the first couple of years, you deserve your own kitchen, private bathroom, and just generally more space.

The only thing about on-campus apartments, though, is that you go from having one or two roommates...to several. And by several, I mean we cram 6 people into one apartment.

The thing is, though, I didn't really realize this was an impressive feat somewhat exclusive to the college experience until I was describing it to one of my friends, and they were baffled. "Five roommates? FIVE ROOMMATES?! How do you not kill each other?!?!"

There are definitely times when you want to, but if I'm not mistaken, homicide is generally still frowned upon.

Regardless of its normality or not, I've lived in two different six-person apartments over the last two years, and it's given me a kind of crash course in life experience. This sort of thing may be totally alien to you (FIVE ROOMMATES?!?!!), or maybe you've had a similar experience, but here's how it really is to live in an apartment with several other people.

When you first move in, it's like an exciting, built-in party.

Do we even need to invite anyone else over? Because everyone's already here!

Then you realize there's definitely not enough space in the fridge for six people's groceries.

"Okay but like...guys.......where am I supposed to put the milk?"

Coordinating shower schedules can get a little difficult.

"Ohhhhhhh my God I was JUST about to get in there!!!"

"Dude you've been standing in your towel for 20 minutes on your phone."

As well as coordinating cooking times.

You don't know the meaning of the word claustrophobic until four people have been trying to make dinner at the same time.

Personal space becomes a thing of the past.

That's just how it is when you're living like sardines.

So does alone time.

College is a never-ending barrage of people everywhere always, anyway, so you just kind of get used to it.

But you always have someone to talk to, and tell all of your crazy stories to.

Some of my best college memories have been just sitting in my room or at the kitchen table listening to my roommates tell me about their day.

Sometimes it can all get a little too much...

Like when quiet hours aren't always respected.

"GUYS I HAVE AN 8 AM TOMORROW I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL CUT YOU IF YOU DON'T TURN THE TV DOWN AND SHUT UP RIIIIIGHT NOOOOOOOW"

When we slack on the chores.

"This place is f****** disgusting."

Or when we're just straight up getting on each other's nerves.

Michael Scott nails it.

But at the end of the day you're thankful for your little makeshift family, because you always have someone with you to....

Ride the struggle bus.

Be unapologetically weird.

Party.

Eat junk food.

Remind you to be your best.

And form a bond that will last long after college is over.

There are a million pros and cons of having a lot of roommates, but I think after all this time, I'd say that the pros come out on top. No matter the struggle, any irritations, whatever--I'm always thankful for them and I can always say that my life is never boring.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
