This Year, Have A Deeper Resolution

It's not about just losing weight or stopping bad habits.

This Year, Have A Deeper Resolution

New beginnings may sound a little cliche, but it’s true, and it’s one thing I look forward to in 2017. Just like when you wake up in the morning, it’s a brand-new day, a fresh start. It’s a time when everyone is looking forward to the new year and trying to better themselves. Some set goals for themselves and try to achieve them throughout the new year. The New Year reminds everyone of how short our time is here and what all we have gone through in not only the last 365 days but also the last and so many years back that we can remember. It reminds us to be thankful for the times and to let go of what we were holding onto in 2016 because 2017 is a brand new year full of new adventures and life experiences.

Personally, I have never been one to set New Year Resolutions for myself. In my opinion, I always thought they were kind of silly. Everyone should want to better themselves and set goals to do so anytime of the year, I don’t think we should wait until January 1, 2017 to start going to the gym, stop drinking soft drinks, or whatever New Year resolution they may have for themselves. Keep that mindset all year long, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Set goals for yourself in the middle of the year, continue to evolve and become the best human you can.

Expect a lot from 2017 and you will receive a lot. New Relationships will flourish and maybe some will fade away. Continue to work on current relationships you want to keep. The New Year isn’t just about making a resolution to lose weight, stop smoking or anything of that sort. I do plan to stay active throughout the year, even more when it warms up outside to keep my body where I am happy with it, but I already do that all the time already. It’s about more than stopping your bad habits or changing your appearance, although it’s a nice boost, and more power to you. It’s deeper than that, it's about bettering your soul. Grow as a person, let your spirit grow stronger! Try to see the light in everything a little brighter! Let go of the pain and mourning from loved ones you lost the past year and remember them with a smile and no tears, remembering only the great times.

Our lives change so much each year, sometimes it happens without us realizing it. We’re constantly evolving. Take all that you have learned the last year and use it to make the wisest decisions in 2017. Be open minded to learning new things and meeting new people. We’re always growing no matter what age we are, there is always more to learn, feel and see. I hope your 2017 and mine is full of adventures, new beginnings, peace, and love!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
