Do You Have a Case of "Spring Fever"?

Are you counting the days for winter to be over and spring to finally get here? If so, you might have "spring fever."

Do You Have a Case of "Spring Fever"?

Our education system likes to be optimistic approach by

calling the second semester of the year the “spring semester.”

Okay…so, when was walking to class in bone chilling cold or slipping on ice in front of everyone considered spring? It’s ironic, and quite frankly, it is just plain wrong.

If you agree with me, then you might be suffering from a condition called Spring Fever. This condition has been tormenting the minds of students for centuries, giving them false hope and amplified desire for the winter to end and spring to get here already! Therefore, here are the symptoms, side effects and possible cures to diagnose yourself and get through the Midwest winter.

SYMPTOMS:

  • Headaches
  • A vampire’s attitude towards sunlight
  • Chronic laziness
  • Mood swings
  • Alienation

SIDE EFFECTS:

  • You take the bus to places and classes right down the street. There’s no way you are spending one ounce of your day in the cold!
  • You binge watch Netflix every chance you get. Hey, your bed is the warmest place you know!
  • No matter if you get your eight hours of beauty sleep, it is still a struggle to get out of bed.
  • You start denying going outside anytime past 4 p.m.
  • The only things you eat or drink are things that are hot. Got to love Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup, coffee and tea.

CURES:

There is no magic pill that can help with Spring Fever, but fear not, there are a few tricks to help get you in a better state of mind.

  • Be as social as you can! Finding things to do with your friends is the easiest and fastest way to get through the winter sanely. Whether it is going to the movies, going out to eat or just hanging out, being with friends is a way better option then waiting for spring to come lying under your bed sheets.
  • Find fun in the outdoors. If it is snowing, don’t run for the hills! Get some friends together and relive your childhood by building a snowman if it is not too cold. Then go back to someone’s house and reward yourself with a nice hot beverage.
  • Go to public places often. Study in libraries, coffee shops and just go hang out among people. That way you won’t be tempted to watch Netflix and waste your day away in bed.
  • Think of 5 things you are grateful for a day. Yes it is cold outside, but thinking about having a warm house to go home to, or hot food to eat can really change your attitude about things. Getting through this winter won’t be easy, but with these little tips, we can welcome the spring with open arms!

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
