Chapel Hill: Dromgoole Rock at Piney Point
It is said that in 1832 two male students fell in love with the same girl named “Fannie.” One student, Peter Dromgoole, and the other student agreed to duel for her love. The latter student shot and killed Dromgoole, causing him to collapse onto a boulder. It is said to this day that the rock is still stained with his blood. Fannie died soon after, and the two lovers are said to be seen meeting near Dromgoole Rock ever since.
Asheville: The Biltmore Estate
In 1886 George Washington Vanderbilt decided to have a vacation home built in Asheville, North Carolina. The Estate was built on 8,000 acres of land. After Vanderbilt’s death, his estate was passed to his daughter and then to his grandsons, who opened the estate to the public. There have been reports of the deceased Vanderbilt family members passing through the library of the estate as ghosts.
Charlotte: Albright Residence Hall at Queens College
Legend has it that a female student committed suicide in this dorm after her parents found out about her lesbian affair with another student. She cut herself, writing "Julie" (her lover’s name) on the walls in her own blood. There have been reports of the apparition of the female student walking down the halls with blood dripping from her wrists. There have also been reports of doors opening and closing by themselves and random knocking on walls.
Jamestown: U.S. Highway 70 Underpass (Lydia’s Bridge)
Ever since her death in 1923 in a motor accident, a young girl named Lydia has been appearing in a white gown asking for someone to pick her up near the underpass. Anyone who picks her up is told that her name is Lydia, she spent the night in Raleigh at a school dance, and needs to get home. When the driver comes near Lydia’s house, she disappears.
