It just has a negative connotation.

Why I Hate The Word "Millennials"
Hanny Naibaho

I have a pet peeve. Well, actually, I have several— one being when someone takes up more than one parking space with their car. It's so annoying- But that’s another article for another day.

My other pet peeve, though, that I’ve recently realized exists, it the use of the word "millennials." For a while, I used the word myself. But then, I thought about it. I realized that no matter how people use the word, it is always said in almost a degrading way, whether that’s the intone or not. It really bothers me when people scoff and say something like “Oh, millennials never think before they act.” First of all, I don't go around saying "Oh, Generation X-ers never think before they act," so why target the younger generation like this? Each generation is different from the one before it, but I don’t understand the daily observance of “millennials’” behavior. When did it become the norm, let alone okay? We are the younger generation—not a science project.

But here is the other thing: the term "millennial" means those born in the 2000's, but people use the word the wrong way all the time. Most often, people are referring to those born post-1990. I hate to break it to you, but if a person wasn’t born in 2000 or later, they’re not a “millennial,” so quit calling them that.

I understand, by the First Amendment, we have the freedom to say what we want within limits, so I can’t stop you from using the term “millennials” but I can let you know how it feels to be on the receiving end of the label. People use it to separate the younger generation from the whole of society all the time when we are a valuable part of society. We are tomorrow’s doctors, lawyers, politicians, business owners, and teachers. And some people would say that “that thought alone is scary because millennials are free spirits.” But how about this? Instead of labeling us “millennials” and cringing at the thought that the younger generation is tomorrow’s leaders, embrace it. Mentor us, guide us, and teach us so we can get it right. We hate being wrong as much as you do. We hate failing as much as you do. So, help us.

Maybe I'm in a minority here. Maybe I’m one of the only ones who has given so much thought to this one word. But I can’t help it. Every time someone uses it, no matter the intentions, I can’t help but feel a little bit insulted and separated from society. We are the younger generation. We’re passionate. We’re dedicated. We want to have fun. We believe in making the best of our time here on Earth. So, give us a chance. We might change how you think.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
