Looking at me today, you would think that I've always loved scary movies. I always want to go see the newest horror film playing and watch horror shows continuously. I even sat through the Horror Movie Makeup Show in Orlando Universal Studios to see just how they created the horror effects not only today but at the beginning of horror movie production.
However, I wasn't always this happy about being scared by a TV. When I was younger, I was scared of everything. My parents have even said that I would have nightmares if I watched Monsters, Inc. that day.
Now, I watch horror movies any chance I get. Honestly, they're my favorite genre of movie. I didn't start liking horror movies overnight though. It was slowly, watching more and more of these films, that I found my love.
I was one of those kids who hated Disney Channel around Halloween because of the commercials. They terrified me. I would occasionally see parts of scary movies/shows that my parents would watch like the first season of American Horror Story. I remember my mom telling me that it would scare me.
Eventually, however, it kind of became a challenge in my 13-year-old brain. I was going to beat my fear.
So, I started slow. I watched the scary Disney Channel commercials. Then the shows, and finally some movies. Not like "The Conjuring" or anything like that. It was "Twitches."
I know what you're thinking. Is that even scary? Umm, yes it was. The black fog thing was terrifying.
Finally, around the age of 15, I started watching actual scary movies. The first one was "Sinister" with my dad. I loved it! Getting the adrenaline spike from jump scares, watching the people around me react, and laughing about it afterward is such a great experience.
Since then, I've become somewhat of a horror movie addict. I'm constantly trying to find people who love horror movies and shows just as much as I do, which is surprisingly hard. I also have somewhat become used to the jump scares in movies, and I hardly jump anymore. I can just sit and watch as the people around me react. Along with this, none of the horror movies I have watched recently have even scared me.
If you're wanting to get into watching horror movies but haven't because they do scare you, just know that it's something you can work on.
Pro tip: I found it better to watch movies that didn't leave the story open-ended and the problem was resolved. It was much better on my fear at the beginning. Try to find movies that you know have a complete resolution first and slowly ease your way into watching the "scariest movie of the year" with the lights off and not just jumping into that right away. Don't be afraid to do some research!
Good luck in your movie quests during the scariest time of the year!
