"That's the problem. We let people say stuff, and they say it so much it becomes OK to them and normal for us. What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?" — Starr
"The Hate U Give" just recently came out at the end of 2017 and has already received such high praise and awards that acknowledge what an impactful book it has already been.
"Angie Thomas has written a stunning, brilliant, gut-wrenching novel that will be remembered as a classic of our time." — John Green, bestselling author of "The Fault in Our Stars"
The novel follows our 16-year-old protagonist, Starr Carter. Starr is balancing two different worlds, the fancy prep school that she is attending and the poor black neighborhood she has grown up in. The book begins with the reacquainting of Starr and her childhood best friend, Khalil, although the light memories are stopped when the two get pulled over by a police officer. Starr witnesses Khalil die at the hands of the world's injustices.
"Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right." — Starr's mom
You will find yourself relating to Starr but also learning so much about this life that is revolved around so much prejudice against her race. It is really a perspective I have never read about before, and one that I believe everyone should be exposed to.
"It's dope to be black until it's hard to be black." — Starr
Marketed as a young adult novel, this book is a great way to expose the younger generation to issues like this happening today, because while it is a work of fiction, it is very much a real topic that is happening every day. By learning about the inequality between races, the stereotypes associated with African Americans, as well as an awareness of the way that some police officers treat them, the younger people will be more educated about this important issue.
"The Hate U Give" will show you a world that you might not have ever known about. I was very surprised reading about Starr's life because it is very much real and people go through these types of things every day. This book will make you question your perspective, your beliefs, and encourage you to speak up.
This entire novel is a voice for activism; it is a novel that contributes to the Black Lives Matter movement and reminds the audience that this is still a very prevalent issue that is still occurring. Instead of looking the other way, the author, Angie Thomas, urges you to speak up for what matters.
