Hate And Division In America
i.guim.co.uk

I’ve seen hate in this country. That hate has led to a division in this country to the point where violence is the answer when having different opinions. I have seen this country fill itself with hate when really we should embrace our differences. For those who do not know, we live in what is called a “melting pot,” which means that our country is a mixture of different cultures, languages and people. For example, you could go down the street and smell different foods, see different people and hear music that brings different cultures to this country. Be proud of that. What is so bad about these people keeping their culture? It is not “corrupting” America or “ruining” our culture because American culture is already a mixture of European, Asian, black and Hispanic traits, and the only difference is that the American people have used those people’s cultures for their own benefit. We are all people with the same fears and same goals. If two people lose their jobs, their reactions would be exactly the same. So what makes us so different?

Unfortunately, again, I will bring in the discussion of the 2016 presidential race and my disdain for Donald Trump; but I will focus on his supporters and his rallies. We see videos and pictures of violence that happen at these events. Why? Why does an old man punch a black man for peacefully protesting? I have never seen so much hate in one area, and it is because the people need their opinions to be the supreme in the country. Trump does not help this, but only fuels this because he knows how to manipulate the people. He uses possibilities such as rapists coming from Mexico and people from China taking our jobs to make them afraid of Hispanics or people from Asia. In reality, these people at said rallies have no knowledge of people from those areas of the world, which is why Trump starts putting these things into their brains. Those insulting statements become the only thought they have on those people, which lead to the xenophobia in our country. We need to educate everyone to show that those people are not rapists and not here to steal our jobs.

The fact that possible leaders in this country are using fear to get votes is embarrassing. As citizens, we should look out for each other and know that fellow citizens are not the problem. Instead of using fighting over our differences, we should accept them because someone else’s decisions should not affect us. Gay people existing will not ruin my future marriage. Women getting abortions does not affect me because I am a man, and it is a woman’s decision. We will always have differences, but we should pride ourselves on them because that is what makes America what it is. You can keep your values close to you, but hating another’s values does not do anything for your own. It simply oppresses the other person. There is hate in this country, but our common similarities should bring us together as one.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
