For Those Trying To Define Relationships

We’ve all been there, trying to explain why a certain guy could never be an interest, why some guys are friends in different degrees, and how some guys really start in our hearts as friends but become so much more.

I am the Hermione Granger type. You know? Strong willed. Sassy. Opinionated. Passionate. Book nerd. Likes definitions. You get the picture.

I just wish I had the magic part… Come on let’s be real this would be this best thing EVER!

There are so many things we can learn from these books. J.K. Rowling is #goals. Love her. Now to get into this, have you ever had a hard time distinguishing your relationships with guys? I know I have struggled with this, especially since it can change over time.

One day it hit me while watching Harry Potter: the story and relationships between characters are the basis for how to explain our relationships. Thank you, J.K. Rowling, for making life less complicated.

So let’s get into it, shall we?

Who is your Neville? Harry? Ron? Draco?

Neville – the guy who is your friend that you don’t have feelings for but he also isn’t your best friend either. This is the majority of the guys you know.

Harry – he is the guy who is your best friend but you don’t feel romantic about him. You both know where you stand and this is the most pivotal part of your friendship. Sometimes a guy may be a Neville but he can’t be a Harry without 1) being your best friend 2) isn’t a romantic interest 3) he also has to know 1 & 2. Harry knew the entire time where he and Hermione stood. The line was clear, he was like her brother and that is what makes their relationship so amazing.

Ron – the guy that makes you defy logic, which in and of itself is a miracle because logic is one of your defining qualities. He is the guy you want to run up and hug but force yourself to remain calm so you hug Harry instead because Harry is safe.

Now we can’t forget about Draco either. He is the guy who pushes your buttons, but not in a good way. He is the guy you wouldn’t even call a friend because he is the definition of a jerk. You know? The guy you put in his place when needed. How can you distinguish your Harry from your Ron?

Looking at it I asked myself which guy is the one I like? RON. Duh. He is charming, downright hysterical, but mostly there is more to him than first meets the eye. Then there is Harry. We all want a Harry in our lives. He is the guy who might as well be your brother because you are so close. He is the guy friend you get advice from when Ron is being stupid.

Ron is the guy you cry over and this is proof that he is the Ron and not Harry of your life. Ron is the one guy who can break your heart as well as make you fly in one look or one word. Keep in mind this guy may have been the “friend” for a while but he made his way into your heart and it really didn’t take much. However, it did take a lot for Hermione to admit it.

So...

Who is your Harry?

Who is your Ron?

No complication. Next time you have to explain the type of relationship you have with a guy friend use the Harry Potter Guide to Guy Friends. Your Harry can’t be your Ron it is just that simple.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
