"Mad Love" and "Relationship Goals" have been used to describe the relationship between Harley Quinn and the Joker, especially since the film "Suicide Squad" was released last summer. This happened despite the comics and even the movie showing the abuse and toxicity of their relationship. This was most likely because most people only know Harley Quinn as the Joker's girlfriend, and stores like Hot Topic marketed Harley Quinn and Joker as "relationship goals."
I'm here to set the story straight.
Let's just put it bluntly: the Joker is an abusive boyfriend. He manipulates Harley into falling in love with him and then controls every single one of her actions. If those are "relationship goals" then I never want to be in a relationship.
That's why when it was announced that Harley Quinn would be dating Poison Ivy in the Harley Quinn movie I was incredibly excited. I couldn't wait for Harley to be with the person she truly deserved to be with and get rid of the Joker once and for all. Everyone I knew was just as excited to see Harley and Ivy happen as I was because we were all well aware of how terrible the Joker is for Harley.
But apparently, not everyone in the world felt the same way. I learned today that someone didn't understand why Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy would be girlfriends in the new movie since the point of Harley Quinn is to be the "Joker's plaything."
Yes, she actually said that.
It's not hard to see the importance of Poison Ivy as Harley's girlfriend once you understand the history of Poison Ivy's friendship with Harley.
Harley didn't even realize how abusive the Joker was towards her until late in their relationship, that's how manipulative he was. It was Harley's best friend, Poison Ivy, who finally pointed out the Joker's terrible behavior, who finally told Harley to leave him.
Because Poison Ivy was the only one who saw Harley as an actual person, not just the Joker's "plaything." Ivy has been at Harley's side the whole time, giving her constant support and attention.
Then once Harley left the Joker Ivy was the only person that was there for her. She took Harley under her wing and helped her to become whole again. Somewhere along the way, they fell in love.
Their relationship has been portrayed in such an amazing way in the comics. They're not fetishized, they're shown as a real couple who have their ups and downs, but at the end of the day, they love each other more than anyone else in the world.
Those are some "relationship goals" right there: healthy love and support.
That's why it's so important for Harley Quinn to be with Poison Ivy romantically, especially after the mess that was "Suicide Squad." It gives people the chance to recognize the abuse the Joker inflicted upon Harley, as well as showing how she learns to love herself through her relationship with Poison Ivy.
Not to mention the fact that this will be the first big-budget film in which a superhero (well, villain, technically) will be in a same-gender relationship.
However, I can only hope that the film actually fulfills all these dreams. But even if the movie doesn't it's incredibly important to remember that the real "relationship goals" is Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.
