CAUTION: SPOILERS FOR SUICIDE SQUAD
Judging from all the angry articles out there, you’d think that Harley Quinn was portrayed as the most abused female character ever in DC’s latest film Suicide Squad. There are so many critics saying that Harley Quinn was physically and emotionally abused in her relationship with the Joker, that the movie didn’t do her justice, or that she was “failed” by Suicide Squad.
So I guess I’m probably the only feminist up in here who completely disagrees with all of these points. Harley Quinn and the Joker are psychopaths. They aren’t exactly the type to have a “Netflix and chill” kind of night and then go to couple’s therapy when they have their quarter life crisis. It would be doing Harley Quinn an injustice to not be treating her like a psychopath in order to fulfill society’s desire to make her conform to the fallacy that is a “normal girl.” Because when it comes down to it, she is not a normal girl. She is the girl who was so attracted to the Joker’s madness that she willingly got him a machine gun, busted him out of Arkham Asylum, and then jumped in a vat of acid for/with him.
Harley Quinn was not “failed” by Suicide Squad. In fact, without her, Suicide Squad itself would have failed to bring in all those millions and millions of box office dollars. After seeing the film, all I wanted was a Harley Quinn movie, a Harley Quinn show, a Harley Quinn EVERYTHING. Harley Quinn was the strongest character in the whole movie. She constantly left the rest of her entirely male squad speechless and often lagging behind. Her craziness empowered her rather than failed her. She would walk straight into danger, regardless of the risk. In fact, at the end of the film she was the one who saved everyone by disabling the Enchantress. She had other empowering moments as well, like when she tore off the collar that the Joker got for her and threw it into the muddy street.
So stop saying that Harley Quinn is abused. I bet that many of the people saying this haven’t even seen the movie yet. So go out and see the movie. You’ll realize how strong, crazy, and empowered Harley Quinn really is. She’ll either kill you or make you buy her an espresso machine. She’s daddy’s little monster.
