After Suicide Squad hit the big screen, it’s no wonder that there has been an increase in popularity for Harley Quinn and her relationship with the Joker. However, there were some issues between the new fans and the old fans about idolizing the couple.
While the movie shows a more idealized relationship for the two, that was only to keep the movie pg-13. In fact, if you’ve heard about all of the Joker scenes that were cut, then you also know that there were scenes where Harley was abused.
For those of us who read the comics, we know just how bad it had been. The Joker abused Harley in every way that he possibly could but she would still go back to him. That is until the more recent comics came out.
Finally, Harley opened her eyes and left. Even though the Joker has shown signs of his dependency and/or obsession over her, she still manages to fight back and walk away. THAT is what makes her strong. She goes from being a victim of abuse, to someone who can stand up for herself. That is why many of us comic book geeks love her so much. Even though she is a villain, she is just as much of a role model as most superheroes if not more so.
