Since the film Suicide Squad came out, a lot of people want a relationship like Harley Quinn and the Joker. Their relationship isn't as amazing as everyone thinks. Yes, they may seem compatible and sure they get each other's insanity, but that is no reason for them to become "relationship goals".
Harley Quinn is physically and emotionally abused by the Joker. From the comics to the cartoon, he beats her. There is a moment in the comics where Harley talks about the sacrifices she had to give in order to keep the chaotic relationship with the Joker.
She wants to prove to the Joker she can help. All she wants is to help, and to get some form of acknowledgement from him. It's a relationship where she gives and he takes.
A woman trapped in a relationship because she loves an abusive man. A woman who is so crazy she is willing to deal with his anger, his hits, harsh words, and his insanity. But that's Harley Quinn. She was a Psychologist who fell in love with her patient.
Harley Quinn and the Joker are not "relationship goals". They call it crazy love for a reason. This kind of love happens all over the place. These relationships are called abusive relationships. There should not be any glorification for something so ugly, so crazy.
He controls her, using her love for him against her. This idea of them being the perfect couple needs to stop. If anything, the only part we should glorify is when she finally fights back.
The moment she left the Joker was the moment she became the new Harley. She become tougher, and much more happy. If anything, that's a goal.
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy's friendship should be the only "relationship goal" that people should want. Their relationship they have together is beautiful and supportive. Be Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. Be the new Harley Quinn who doesn't need the Joker. Be anything but Harley Quinn and the Joker.
