Folks, we've reached the end of 'Beat Dook' week. I can honestly say that I've never experienced anything quite like the Carolina vs. Duke rivalry. Students dress up, don body paint, and last night, a line of about 100 students stood for 24 hours to get tickets! While that's not quite as crazy as other places, I still think it's pretty impressive! Here are some fast facts about our rivalry with Duke!!
1. ESPN named it the "third greatest North American sports rivalry" in 2000
2. It was ranked as the top "Hottest Rivalry" in college basketball by the college version of Sports Illustrated.
3. The first Carolina vs. Duke game was January 24, 1920 (the Heels won)
4. Franklin Street was named after Ben Franklin.
5. You can still get Duke tickets for tonight at a nice price of $3,000 each.
And regardless of who thinks which basketball team is better, our school is definitely a beautiful one, and our academics are just as good! I knew as soon as I stepped foot on campus my junior year of high school that UNC would be home for me. The people, the scenery, and the atmosphere make Chapel Hill a place like no other. Here are some of my favorite things:
The Old Well. It's like a postcard!
2. You can major in some pretty abstract stuff. My major is American Studies with a concentration in Southern Studies. My lectures have covered fish, quilts, salt, and the Southern Imaginary, among other things. How awesome is that?!
Our mascot is my favorite. He's fierce but adorable!
Our campus is so beautiful. Since it's so old, I love that you can basically trace the time periods across campus based on the architecture of the buildings.
I have to say it: Tarheel basketball. Carolina fever is a real thing, friends.
I hope you enjoyed! GO TAR HEELS!
