To The Hardworking Janitors That Clean Up My School
Pepe Cabrera

One day as I was studying, I heard you whistling a happy tune. I also saw you squirting bleach from a squeaking spray bottle at stains on the old carpeted floor. I saw you scrub those stains with the toilet brush in your hand and I appreciated your attention to detail. All the time you were whistling enthusiastically and greeting everyone that walked by with a smile. I apologize for staring, but I was mesmerized by your selflessness and awakened to the thought that you were not the only one that helps to clean up my school, that there are more people just like you who serve us daily and receive little more than a paycheck as our thanks.

To you and the other hardworking janitors that clean up my school, thank you. Though I rarely see you, I know you are there. I see the evidence of your work as I go throughout my day. The trash bins are magically emptied and the bathrooms are cleaned. The trash we fail to make into bins is picked up, and the floors are swept, vacuumed, and cleaned.

Though I don’t know you personally, I reap the benefits of your handiwork at all hours of the day. Though you don’t know me, you serve me selflessly by dedicating yourself to cleaning up my messes and correcting my carelessness.

I can’t imagine how hard your work is or how often it goes unappreciated. You are called to clean up all kinds of messes, and you do it with a smile on your face. You are called to fix things that are broken, and you do it with love in your heart. You are called when people are in need, and you are there to help them always.

I want you to know that I appreciate all that you do. And I’m sorry for my carelessness throughout the years that makes you have to work harder. Thank you for your joy and your selfless love of people who you don’t even know. I thank you for your attention to detail and hard work. Thank you for serving and loving others with the works of your hands.

I know that a bunch of “thank you’s” will never be

enough, but I wanted to let you know that I see what you are doing and I appreciate it all. I hope you feel the love I am sending to you today, and again, thank you, for all you do to help us all get through the day.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
