If you have seen the any news recently, you probably have heard of many awful things that have been happing all around the world. While it is good to keep up to date with current events, it can be pretty upsetting to only hear about the bad things going on. My mission this week was to take to social media and find out some good things that have been going on. I asked for people to tell me anything that they have experienced, done, witnessed, etc. and I was very happy with the results. Here are some of the good things that have been happening in the world around us.
"I went to Taco Bell on Monday and there was a man in his army uniform by himself. An older lady went over to him and began talking to him for about twenty minutes. The she proceeded to buy his meal with the help of the cashier."
"I saw a homeless man at the gas station who was going from garbage can to garbage can searching for food. Everyone was staring at him and nobody did anything other than treat him poorly. I was upset that people were treating him this way because of his appearance. I gave him ten dollars and got him some food and he looked at me with such joy and thanked me.
"On July 3rd, a friend of mine who was battling cancer passed away and I was very upset. I knew I couldn't go to the viewing and funeral alone because it would be too much to handle. A friend of mine went with me to the viewing, standing in line for two hours and comforted me as I cried. She also went with me to the funeral the next day and kept me company for another two hours throughout the whole service and was so supportive the whole time."
"Recently I was out to dinner and I heard this lady talking to her four kids. She was telling them that she's taking in another child from foster care because they were in a bad family and the two little twin boys asked, 'Are you taking them in because they have a bad mommy and daddy like ours?'. It turns out she fosters kids and I asked the waitress for her bill and paid it. The waitress thanked me and said she is such a loving person and that she deserved something like this."
"This Thursday I was volunteering at a hospital. It was my first day at the hospital, so I was really worried about messing up. I went around filling up the glove compartment in each room when I ran into this one man paralyzed from the neck down due to a car accident. He struck a conversation with me and we talked for a while about my school, his work, etc. Despite everything that's wrong with him, he kept on asking me how I was and if anything was wrong. It really made me happy to be there."
"I woke up late and was running behind which put me in an awful mood. I didn't have time to make breakfast or even grab something to drink. There was a Starbucks drive-thru on my way so I stopped there in hopes to get something quickly. Of course with my luck that morning, the line was crazy long. When I pulled up to the speaker, they told me just to pull forward to the window. When I pulled up, the woman told me that the man in front of me paid for me and to pick anything to drink and pick a pastry as well. Really made me calm down and it helped improve my morning so much."
"I was at dinner with a friend last night and my friend paid for another table's dinner. She then insisted that we leave before they found out who it was."
We, as humans, all have the ability to be good people. Whether you're paying for someone's meal, buying someone's coffee, or just striking up a conversation, it takes so little effort and time to be a good person. Please remember how many opportunities you have throughout the day to do something kind, and whenever you can, pay it forward.
