There will always be that one person. The one who complains about every tiny thing. The one who tries to make you feel bad about yourself. The one who has to belittle everyone around them to make themselves feel good. No matter where you go, what you do, or who you are, these people will always find you. But they do not have to control what you do or how you feel.
Becoming an adult means learning to depend on yourself for everything, including your happiness. No one will make it their priority to make you happy once you are an adult. Part of growing up is figuring out what you need and want in your life to be an overall happier and better person. Sometimes that means identifying the negativity in your life.
Once you go to college or get your first job, people start interacting with you differently. You find out exactly who you want to be around. Spare time is scarce so why waste your free time with people who do not treat you the way you deserve to be treated.
Never make someone a priority if they could care less to make you one. Maybe you have been friends with someone since middle school, but if they constantly hurt you, you need to stop letting yourself be hurt by them. Find the friends who you enjoy talking to and being around and who reciprocate those same feelings towards you. I promise they are out there.
Don't let yourself be taken advantage of either. You cannot spend your time always trying to keep the people around you happy. You need to keep yourself happy. If someone continually brings you down, you need to remove them from your life.
Although we may try, we can never completely avoid every toxic person we know. Sometimes you might be stuck with them because they are a family member, a teacher, a co-worker, or anyone else you have no choice but to interact with.
This is where we test our strength, positivity, and self-love. Tell yourself that these people have to control over you and your emotions. You are the only person who decides who you are and how you feel. You have all the power over your own life. You decide how to respond to every situation you are put in.
Everybody has bad days because no one is perfect. But there should be more good days than bad. If you are unhappy nearly every day, you need to evaluate your life. Find out the cause of the bad days and make changes.
The source of your bad days may be someone or something you interact with. Or it could be you. Focus on finding reasons to be happy every day and cut out as much of the negative parts as possible.
