To celebrate my greyhound Remmy’s birthday, I wanted to write an open thank you letter to her. Dogs teach us so much in obvious ways, but also sometimes in more obscure ways every day. Being my canine best friend, Remmy, and all dogs are extremely loyal and have a special bond with their family.
It may seem somewhat cliché, but I believe Remmy chose my family and not the other way around. In a quite literal sense, she was a wild card. Through http://www.alliesforgreyhounds.org/, we chose several greyhounds for a home visit in order to chose one for adoption. Being unable to agree on a third pick, the representatives decided on bringing a sort of question mark dog to surprise us.
When the day arrived to meet the hounds, the women brought Lava, a brindle, Kelso, who was jet black, and Remmy, who was small and tan. Having predetermined somewhat of a bias towards Kelso, we didn’t expect the wild card to hit us like a curve ball. Good Remedy, or Remmy, had been in foster care for almost six months because she couldn’t seem to find her forever home that was a perfect fit for her. Then, she did something unlikely. While the other two male hounds bounded around the house and the backyard, Remmy laid down in the dog bed with many layers of blankets and pillows. Eventually, she fell asleep, and at that moment we knew she had chosen us and we just had to adopt the sweet baby.
It has now been three years since she found her forever home and the bond my whole family has formed with her is truly one of a kind. Remmy is treated just like any other family member and has experienced all the good times and bad times with us. She can sense when someone is sick or having a tough day and shows us love and affection. Eventually, I gave her a middle name. Happy Seventh Birthday Remmy Renee Zlydaszyk! I hope to have the complete joy and privilege to be able to make her many more birthday scrambled eggs!
Three years have flown passed in a blur of incredible love and support from my greyhound. Please, consider adopting a dog, especially a greyhound. Despite their racing careers in the past, they are extremely low maintenance. With an early life of hard work, greyhounds always tend to be couch potatoes, much to some people’s disbelief. My only regret about adopting a greyhound is the fact that I can’t adopt them all!
