Twenty years. Twenty. That is how long we have had the privilege to play and enjoy all facets of the world of "Pokemon."
If you had told 8-year-old me back in 2001 when he first picked up and played the games that said games would still be just as relevant in 15 years when he was an adult and that he would still be playing those games, that kid would have freaked out because that news would the coolest thing ever. Sure enough, 23-year-old me in 2016 is freaking out over the announcement of "Pokemon Sun" and "Pokemon Moon" because it's the coolest thing ever.
In a climate where everything retro is always in and video game remakes are more common than the cold, "Pokemon" is the ultimate survivor. What started as a neat little gimmicky game in Japan where you collect, trade, and fight monsters has turned into a multimedia juggernaut. Games, TV shows, movies, card games, toys, and all other assorted collectibles have littered the bedrooms of millions of kids around the world back in the late nineties. What many thought would be another fad from the era that would die out has sustained long past its supposed expiration date.
And now, in this retro climate, we are able to download the original three games, the Red, Blue, and Yellow versions on our 3DS systems and play them on the go without the need to get out our ancient Game Boys and cartridges (both have which have likely seen better days) for the first time ever.
(ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!)
Add all of this news on top of the upcoming release of "Pokken Tournament," this first fighting game in the franchise's history, and it's becoming a "Pokemon" Pandemonium.
If ever there was a time to be into "Pokemon"--either as an old fan, a hipster who only likes it ironically for the trend or a true newcomer experiencing the series for the first time--that time would be now. Between the new games, the old games being made new again for a new generation and the existing media still getting support from Nintendo and its developers, one would be hard pressed to find something not to enjoy out of the world of "Pokemon."
To Nintendo, Game Freak, Creatures Inc. and The Pokemon Company, thank you for all the memories we have had and for all the memories you are sure to bring us in the many years to come. Happy anniversary.
