Have you ever tried to explain a really complex and unique idea to someone, and you just couldn't get it across? Or maybe you've been on the other end, trying to pay attention to someone but not understanding a word they say? If only there was a medium we could all understand.... where we could convey ideas and thoughts and feelings in a tasteful and entertaining way... Unfortunately, most of us lack the vocabulary and artistic skill to bring our greatest thoughts and feelings out of our minds and into the world. But luckily, there's the occasional outstanding person who can.
This piece of genius came from the genius known as the Oatmeal, a cartoonist and self-proclaimed lover of Nutella. Thank you, Mr. Oats, for finally putting my hatred of air mattresses into a form others can understand.
But all joking aside, I want to take an opportunity to recognize a truly creative man, who creates amazingly deep and inspiring stories to share with the world. I've seen his comics put people into fits of laughter, as well as literally move others to tears. One of his publications in particular comes to mind as I go about my first week back to classes. I hear people bemoaning the various troubles they have in life, or even just the lack of exceptionally good things happening. I hear friends and strangers all complaining because of essentially one thing: They aren't happy. And as I watch all those unhappy people everyday, I think of this comic. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/unhappy
Cartoonist Matthew Inman, the man behind the Oatmeal, makes a point that seems to make a lot of sense to me. You don't need to be happy 24/7, and you really shouldn't be, so don't worry about it. Don't worry if you're happy or sad or just have a really weird itch, just keep on doing what drives you. Be you instead of trying to manage what being you should feel like.
On a lighter note, this guy also makes a killer card game, check it out sometime. It's becoming commonplace in several game stores, it's available on Amazon, or you could corner me at Wilkes University and ask about playing sometime, I usually keep a copy somewhere nearby.
