Happiness Blooms from Within

Who doesn't want to be an overall happy person?

I’m sure many of you have seen on Facebook or on Pinterest the idea of the Happy Jar. Basically, what you do is take a jar and everyday add a piece of paper that has your happiest moment written on it to the jar. I’ve seen a gazillion posts about this so I decided on January 1st, 2017 to start doing it and will make the effort to finish December 31st, 2017.

Oh boyyyy… one whole year to do this… good luck to me!

Let me say that some days it is extremely hard to write down a moment that made me happy! I work two jobs and one deals with customers all day (that doesn’t make me happy one bit haha). With noticing this, it made me realize that even though I thought I was a genuinely happy person, I’m really not. Here are a few things that drive me insane:

1. Rude Customers

You know, the ones who think they are entitled to everything and think you need to be waited on hand and foot. Sorry, I’m not paid to be your personal assistant!

2. Slow Drivers

Don’t get me started on the amount of slow drivers there are in Western New York. Every time I get out of work and just want to go home because I’ve had a long day I get stuck behind the slowest of slow drivers. Can you read the speed limit sign?? 40mph means that you need to do at least 40mph, not 30mph. Yes, as you can clearly tell I have really bad road rage.

3. Politics

Especially this year!!! All I’m going to say is that everyone has a right to having their own opinion. Everybody also has their freedom of speech. Basically, you have a right to vent your frustration, happiness, whatever to me or on Facebook, but please please PLEASE don’t try to shove it down my throat and make my views agree with yours if I disagree.

Just writing this list gets me aggravated! So… back to the Happy Jar. As you can see, I need to work on my happiness. Here is what I have done to make myself happier (or at least look like it) since January 1st:

1. Try to Get a Good Exercise in Once a Day

It’s very good at relieving stress. I highly recommend it!

2. Eating Healthier

I have to say, changing my eating habits has made me feel a lot better about myself. My self-confidence has increased and I’m slowly starting to love myself again.

3. Laughing More

Anybody that can make me laugh, you are definitely a keeper in my life. When you laugh so hard that you can’t breathe and can’t see because you’re crying so hard is the best kind of laughter.

4. Cute Texts

What girl won’t smile or be happy when the guy she’s talking to sends a cute text? Works for me every time!

Good luck to me for remembering to fill up my Happy Jar every day for the next year! Can’t wait to see how much I’ve grown on December 31st, 2017.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
