Across ages, genders, and cultures, one of the thing that we all share are emotions. Things that make us laugh with joy, sob with grief, lower our heads in shame. I was curious as to what moment sticks in people's minds, what they think of to lift their spirits when they need it. So, I asked 10 people what the happiest moments of their lives were, and this is what they said.

Sanjana Darsipudi

"Watching my mom and dad as their eyes welled up with pride and love on the day of my arangetram — one of the most critical milestones in an Indian classical dancer's career — was the happiest moment of my life. This milestone reflected the 10 years of dedication and hard work I've put into dance."

"After hours of dance practice every day, I finally got the opportunity to perform at a national level. I waited patiently as they announced the awards after the performance. I remember how tears built up in my eyes when I didn't hear my name. 10 minutes later they let us know they forgot to announce the senior category winners. I heard my name be announced for second place for USA, and my tears became tears of joy."

"One of the happiest moments was when I went back to NJ to surprise my friends for winter break! The look on their faces and the funny videos I got of them crying made me smile for so long. And I can't imagine my life without them. I had been planning the surprise for a while now, and my brother had almost ruined it, but I had managed to keep it a surprise!

"Another happy moment in my life was when my little sister was born. We were all at home with my grandparents because we had school and my mom and dad were at the hospital. We got the news that my sister was born, and no one slept a blink. I was too excited to get done with school and get picked up in our new car that was able to fit our entire family because our other car was too small."

"My happiest moment was when I got my first cat-Julian. I've always wanted a dog for the longest time and parent never agreed. Although they were demurely against a dog because we wouldn't be able to take care of it they fell in love with the kittens at the shelter, and so did I. I never thought I would end up with a cat but the moment I got Julian was one of the happiest moments of my life so far. Now I have two cats, and they make me so happy, and my whole life has been changed since that moment."

"The happiest moment of my life was a reunion with my best friend after we'd been separated for five months. Before she moved away, we would spend every single day together, so her absence in my life was especially heartbreaking. I was excited at just the thought of visiting her, so when we finally met up, I was absolutely ecstatic. My favorite part was being able to run into her arms and see her smiling face."

The happiest moment of my life was visiting my friends for the first time after moving away. I came as a surprise, and the look on my best friend's face when I walked into her doorway without warning, and I'll never forget it. Seeing my friends so surprised and overjoyed to see me made me feel so warm inside, and it's a memory that brings me joy every time I think back to it.

What I learned was that though everyone has different experiences, we all share the same emotions and can appreciate happiness and joy.

I think it's important to learn about others and about what makes them happy, as it helps define them and make them unique. Hearing what makes other people happy can help you realize that happiness can come from anywhere, from anything important or insignificant, big or small. That's the beauty of happiness.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
