I go to college in the panhandle of Texas, but I go home for Christmas to Houston, a whole different part of Texas, culturally and seasonally. I usually leave in the middle of December. I pack everything in my car to last me six weeks, and head out all bundled up in a sweater, windbreaker, and booties. I hit Dallas halfway through the drive, and it's warmer so I take off the windbreaker. I eventually hit Houston and within five minutes of being home, I'm in a tank top and Nike shorts. Welcome to the rollercoaster that is a Texas holiday season. And to celebrate the madness of a Texas Christmas, here are 7 holiday struggles and traditions of the Lone Star State.
1. The Tamale Craze
Whether or not you like them, you'll still eat them. It's basically a sin not to. And don't forget to take lawn chairs to the tamale truck because that line basically wraps around the parking lot.
2. Watching Christmas movies and becoming jealous of the snow.
But in reality, we would probably hate it because anything below 50 degrees is already too miserable for us.
3. Breaking a sweat stringing up lights on the house.
Dad usually enjoys a ice cold beer afterwards.
4. No, we can't eat until after the game is over.
Thank you Jesus for being born and blessing us with the game of football.
5. Christmas Barbecue
Don't waste time roasting a turkey for a party full of people when you can just throw something on the grill in the backyard.
6. A high school reunion at H-E-B
You actually need to put make-up on when heading to the grocery store of the gods because every college student in your Texas town is there picking up whatever food item Mom forgot to buy.
7. Christmas Day in shorts
I know it sounds wrong, but it is what it is down here.
Merry Sweat-mas y'all.
