This is a list of only a few of the difficulties celebrating Hanukkah can be. At least this year Hanukkah falls during Winter break instead of finals week. If I ever have to celebrate Hanukkah during finals week I better be careful about lighting the candles because my tears might put out the flames.
1. Finding Presents
You’ve got to buy 8 times as many gifts for each person you want to give a gift to for Hanukkah while still trying to be creative and not copy another’s ideas or re-gifting by accident.
2. Tacky Sweaters
Finding Hanukkah sweaters that are unique for each family member can be difficult when there’s only one overpriced sweater option.
3. Hanukkah's History
Explaining the story of how Hanukkah came to be to all the people who don’t understand while trying not to sound crazy that you believe a lamp stayed lit on its own.
4. The Dreidel Game
Not being able to play the dreidel game with people who aren't Jewish because every time you play you have to stop to explain what the letters mean. Or when you do play with Jewish people and they want to bet actual money.
5. Gelt
Finding gelt that isn't just chocolate American currency.
6. Hanukkah Cards
Going to all the stores in your city to buy all the Hanukkah cards to send to your relatives knowing you'll get the same ones back because there's no variety at any of the stores.
7. Christmas Music
Listening to the Christmas music in all the stores from the beginning of November without hearing a single Hanukkah song. Let's not even talk about awkwardly getting your Hanukkah festivities interrupted by Christmas carolers.
8. Hanukkah Decorations
Having trouble decorating for Hanukkah because there's not many options for decorations or they're all overpriced/ugly.
9. The Food
There's always going to be a competition on who can make the best latkes, but I'm not complaining about this one.
