Handling Stress and Anxiety: As Told By College Students

Everyone deals with stress at some point in their life and some deal with anxiety as well. According to The Anxiety and Depression Association of America, forty million U.S. adults suffer from an anxiety disorder. That is about one is eight people in the U.S. Also, 85% of college students reported feeling stressed and/ or overwhelmed by everything they had to do at some point within the past year. That is about 17 million U.S. college students.

There is not just one thing that works for everyone, but there are many things to do to cope with and handle stress and anxiety.

"Try meditation. I do it every day just to keep myself calm and I do it again whenever things start getting bad."

"I usually find it helpful to go for a drive or take a really long shower or bath. Both with music!"

"I try to think of something i can see, hear, touch, taste and feel. It makes me feel in control of my surroundings and it calms me down"

"Breathing techniques for panic attacks. And thinking about all the positive things happening and blocking out the negative"

"Exercise!"

"Think happy, be happy"

Write things down. The good and bad. But make sure to write what makes you happy and what you're thankful for"

"Workout, eat healthy, drink lots of water! Make lists to help you focus on each day, not always the whole future. Call a friend or family member to calm down. Do something you love each day. Take a break when you are most stressed."

"Weighted blankets are very calming. They stimulate serotonin production. It's like a really good hug but all over and they also promote better sleep!"

"Make lists of what you have to do. It helps me to see clearly and makes my mind feel not as jumbled. Talking to people helps too. Anything that gives you a feeling of comfort"

"I have a mediation app (iPhone) and it helps me a lot. It's called Simple Habit and it's free in the App Store"
