How to Deal With Stress

How to Deal With Stress

We all have those moments when people are asking too much of us, we're spread too thin, and we feel as though we're failing in all areas. How do we deal with it? Of course there are healthy alternatives as well as unhealthy ones, but most of them seem ineffective. From someone that deals with stress and anxiety regularly, it's hard to find effective ways. But here are my top 5 ways that will at least change your mindset and help you deal with your issues with a level head.

1. Pray

First and foremost this must be done. Don't pray that your problems will go away, don't pray that solutions will come. Speak out and proclaim that the God who sent His only Son to die is bigger than anything you can be facing. Declare that He will come through...and then wait. Patience is one of the hardest parts about praying.

2. Do something mindless

Find something that doesn't take any energy whether that's watching Netflix, doing a word search, yoga, or cooking food. Allow your mind to be set on something else but don't let it be something that requires a bunch of thought or preparation. Simply sidetrack your mind to a place of temporary distraction. (Disclaimer: please limit this or you'll feel worse after wasting so much time).

3. Run

Any type of exercise will elevate your heart rate and cause your body to release endorphins that will make you feel better. This will, if nothing else, leave you feeling like you improved your fitness even the slightest. Elle Woods in the movie Legally Blonde said it best.

4. Clean

This is one of my favorites. When I'm feeling overwhelmed, I begin frantically cleaning. It's a good way to feel like I am improving my situation by cleaning the environment around me. It's simply tricking my mind, but it's a way to be productive and deal with anxiety at the same time.

5. Talk it out

Find people who are good listeners. It's okay to express your emotions and talk about what's on your mind. But choose people that will help you overcome your obstacles, not hold you in the same needy and helpless place.

These tips don't prevent stress nor do they fix your circumstances, but taking care of yourself and not allowing your situations to overwhelm you is the best way to handle them. Don't let your worries dictate how you feel, find what self-care strategies work and USE THEM.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

10 Things Only Equestrians Understand

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
