Throughout the 2015 and 2016 year, all of America has been talking about Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton. Yes you read it correctly, hip- hop and Alexander Hamilton, and Lin-Manuel Miranda makes them flow smoothly throughout the show.
The 2016 Tony Awards aired Sunday, June 12 on CBS.
"Hamilton" had a record 16 nominations and won 11 out of the 16, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and several others going to lead and supporting actors and actresses. I'd list them all, but that would have to be its own post. People were truly in the "room where it happens" that night.
Several aspects of the Tony's were based around what made "Hamilton" popular and unique. The opening of the shows and closing of the show and Ham4Ham. Ham4Ham is incorporated through "Hamilton's" lottery where fans hope to get a front row seat to the next show. During this time, Lin-Manuel himself and special guests entertain fans; however, the best part for many fans is that they are 10 to 20 feet away from the actors themselves,
This was incorporated through the Tony Awards by having casts perform their favorite show tunes together and announcing what is next for the show. All because "Hamilton" made this popular. Previous musicals have tried this, but it hasn't worked.
Several jokes were made throughout the show about how it was all about "Hamilton." Lets face it, it kind of was; however, it was well deserved. One of my favorite jokes from the night was from host James Corden. "I promise tonight won't be all about 'Hamilton,' there will be commercial breaks." Which turned out to be very accurate.
"Hamilton" almost made a record with its number of wins; however, "The Color Purple" is still in the lead with 12 in 1996.
"Hamilton" has brought non-theater goers into the world of theater. People are excited to learn about the life of Alexander Hamilton.
Hamilton plays at the Richard Rogers Theatre in New York, and from what I can tell, you will be able to see it for months and years on end seeing Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr and George Washington and more in action while rapping.
