At last Friday's performance of the hit broadway show, Hamilton: An American Musical, the cast shared a special message to a guest audience, Vice President-elect Mike Pence. The former Governor of Indiana was making his way out of the theatre, when the cast of the show gathered on stage to give him a special message. He had no choice but to turn and listen. Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr in the award-winning musical, gave the message to Vice President-elect Pence. Dixon explained after introducing the guest, "We sir, (pauses to stop the booing towards Pence), we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable. We truly hope that this show has inspired to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us," Christoper Mele and Patrick Healy report from the New York Times.
According to a video posted by the hit musical's twitter account, Dixon encouraged the audience to pull out their cell phones to take videos, as the show's message needed to be spread "far and wide." Afterwards, Pence left the Richard Roger's theatre not knowing what the President-elect, Donald J. Trump was going to do at 9 AM the following morning. As actors, fans, and patrons of the show woke up to yet another Twitter rant from the future President. He demands an apology with his tweet, "The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The case of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!" That was tweeted out to this 15.6 million followers at the time of 8:56 AM. Mr. Pence however, says he wasn't offended by the conversational remarks made by Dixon. He called it, "...a great show. I'm a history buff and my hat's off to the cast and to the extraordinary team that brought Hamilton to the public. We really enjoyed being there." He later in the interview with Face the Nation stated, "...I wasn't offended by what [Dixon] said."
This issue that the cast of Hamilton brought up is an important one. We should push our next administration to represent all groups in the United States of America. This should also serve as another reminder, there is a line between having heated debates and conversation. Dixon's message to Pence should serve as a lesson to Americans, we do not need to be rude, evil, or attacking when we debate with men and women we do not agree with. Although I do not believe it did, I have a hope that President-elect Donald J. Trump heard this message and will model this when he steps into office on in January. I also hope that he will model this behavior when he will negotiate with other countries and his political rivals over the next four years.
